Two Approaches

Summary

There are two approaches to building an investor list: bottoms-up (starting with people you know) and top-down (identifying investors you are not yet networked with). I suggest doing both.

There are fundamentally two ways to build an investor list and I highly recommend doing both at the same time:

Bottom-up

Bottom-up simply means starting with people who you already know. Those might be investors that you are already close with, or the investors your close founder friends are close with.

Beware: fundraising is the kind of process that quickly reveals the difference between people, who say they will support you and those that actually do. More often than not, the answer can be both delightful (because you realize you have support where you expected none) and depressing (because you realize you didn’t have support where you thought you would have it). The above sidebar notwithstanding, by definition, you are well-networked with such investors and that means they are - all things considered - easier to access. That is a big benefit that needs to be balanced out against the tradeoff - namely, they may not be a good fit for the specific startup you are building. If your close friend is running a SaaS company and you are working on a consumer startup, chances are that their investors will not be very relevant for what you are working on. Hence the importance of complementing the bottom-up approach with a top-down effort.

Top-down

Top-down means identifying investors that you may not (yet) be networked with. Naturally, the idea is to identify investors who would be a great fit for the kind of company you are working on.
